Beyond “Asians are hardworking”
On the heels of two mass shootings, journalist S. Mitra Kalita reflects in TIME about the value of Asian lives in America.
Issue #52
Hi all —
This newsletter is resuming for 2023. I’m back in the U.S. after a few weeks traveling across Asia, including some very special stops across South India which I’ll write about in the coming months.
Over the last few weeks, it’s also been so devastating to see my home, the U.S., in pain following more Asian and Black lives lost due to senseless violence.
Seasoned journalist S. Mitra Kalita wrote a powerful piece for TIME about the value of Asian lives in America. Read it on TIME.com.
To some, Asian work matters more than Asian lives. There are so many misconceptions over the Asian experience in the U.S. that create this image. It starts to feel conditional, as if the only place for Asians in the U.S. is that of work, of subservience. Also dangerous is when this becomes how we see ourselves.
On a different note: I am excited to share that the Colorado Media Project has awarded Red, White and Brown Media with funding to support capacity building in 2023. I’m very thankful that folks are investing in experiments to engage with South Asian American communities — you.
Thanks for joining the conversation,
